Curated by Storm Janse van Rensburg, We Didn’t Choose to be Born Here by Thero Makepe explores the intertwined histories of Botswana and South Africa through family, migration, activism, and memory. The exhibition design draws on a typewriter aesthetic as a nostalgic reference to history and lineage, reflecting the artist’s practice and the exhibition’s themes of resistance, loss, belonging, and hope. Enlarged photographs from the artist’s work were layered with archival materials and historical photographs to create a rich, textured visual language.
